Get your application authorized

New passport applications must be authorized in person by a Passport Acceptance Agent at a Passport Acceptance Facility, such as a post office or courthouse.

  • Bring everything listed above to the facility
  • Tell the agent you’re using an expediting service to “hand carry” your application

The agent seals these in an envelope:

  • Your DS-11 form
  • Two passport photos
  • Proof of citizenship
  • Two copies of the authorization letter
  • Proof of departure
  • Your check or money order to “U.S. Department of State”

Sign the DS-11 in front of the agent. The agent gives the sealed envelope back to you.

Don’t open the sealed envelope. Opening it cancels the application. Make sure the agent returns it to you. If the agent isn’t sure about releasing it, refer them to page 31 or 44 of the Passport Agent’s Manual, under “Hand-carrying of Executed Applications.”
